hey this is sara mindel. i didnt really get to say much in class but i did want to bring up the issue of the contrast of cultures in regard to the cause of the attack. In class we covered politics, religion, and economics but no one brought up the fact that some people resent our culture influencing theirs. In the middle east many areas still have very traditional cultures which they want to preserve, and believe our culture to be evil. Maybe the attack was an attempt to scare us and our influence away from their countries ?

well I would say that the attack was less focused on the United States (assuming that the "us" and "our" you are refering to is america only)and more of an attack on all of "western society". I think the US was choosen as the victim because of our country's economic and political power worldwide-I don't think anyone would deny that the US is the most powerful country in the world.

We seemed invincible, so a successful attack on us is a big deal, so when the rest of western society sees that the great US was attacked, they should get scared and get out of the country, right? My guess is that the terrorists were radicals that did not expect a counter-attack which resulted in an even greater influence of western culture in the middle east.

I think that in the future we will have to face more attacks on not only our country but worldwide from suicidal/kamikaze terrorists trying to instill a sense of pride in their fellow countrymen by attempting to rid their country of outside influence from everyone including the eastern cultures of Japan, China, and Korea.
