Were the original goals of the PA reached? Has it allowed over-reach by government, or is this the reality of life post-9/11?

Just as some of the members in the debate over the Patriot Act foresaw, the act gives extended ease to investigate private businesses and individuals. Whether or not these scrutinies into pivate companies are valid or justified remains a quandry. Since the PA gives such leeway for positive eandeavors- catching underground terrorists before they act- Americans now have to give way to some of their own privacy inorder to get the protection they ultimately want to have. Although intelligence can sometimes cross the line, it might provide Americans with a sense of security knowing that the government is seeking in every area possible to find terrorist links, in effort to deter such an unsuspected tragedy as 9-11 from occurring again. On the optimistic side, maybe this is just reality post 9-11.
